    SNOW WHITE…..IT’S REALLY PRETTY GOOD

Disney’s latest adaptation of Snow White has arrived amidst a storm of controversy and mixed early reviews. Given the early critic responses, I approached the film yesterday with uncertainty, unsure of what to expect. While it has been criticized in various aspects, I found the final product surprisingly entertaining and engaging.

One of the most notable pre-release debates surrounded the redesign of the Seven Dwarfs. Originally conceived as fantastical creatures in early production stages, they were ultimately changed to more human-like figures. This decision sparked significant discourse among Disney fans, with some lamenting the departure from the traditional representation, while others appreciated the update. However, after watching the film, I found the Seven Dwarfs, a blend of CGI and live photography to be well-conceived and delivered, and also to be well-cast, particularly Dopey and Andrew Barth Feldman, who brought a fresh and heartwarming moment to the story by finally speaking up—a new and endearing character development.

The lead performances were a definite highlight. Rachel Zegler as Snow White and Andrew Burnap as Jonathan (a reimagined love interest replacing the traditional Prince Charming) delivered convincing and charismatic performances. Their love story was a refreshing take on the classic narrative, making it feel more relevant to modern audiences. Additionally, Gal Gadot’s portrayal of the Evil Queen was mesmerizing—her beauty and commanding presence made her character’s obsession with vanity entirely believable. Gadot captured the essence of a villain who recoils at any threat to her beauty, making her an effective and memorable antagonist. She was pretty, but nobody liked her!!!! Good casting and acting!

From a technical standpoint, the cinematography and CGI elements were well executed. Visually, the movie was captivating, successfully blending live action with fantastical elements. I found the use of CGI tasteful and not overdone, adding to the immersive fairy tale atmosphere.

One of the weaker aspects of the film was the original musical score. While new songs were composed for this adaptation, they lacked the depth and impact of iconic Disney hits like Let It Go from Frozen. However, the decision to retain Whistle While You Work was a smart move, as it provided a nostalgic connection to the beloved 1937 animated classic. Much like It’s a Small World, the song lingered in my mind well after leaving the theater.

The audience reaction was another strong indicator of the film’s effectiveness. The theater was filled with families—children, parents, and grandparents—all of whom remained seated through the credits, a sign of their engagement and enjoyment. This broad appeal suggests that Snow White succeeds in providing entertainment for multiple generations.

Despite its controversies, I found this adaptation to be an enjoyable and well-cast retelling of a classic story. While it may not lend itself to a completely new theme park ride, elements of its scenic design could easily be incorporated into existing attractions. In the end, I left the theater pleasantly surprised, having received far more entertainment than I had initially expected.

For those hesitant about seeing the film due to early criticisms, I’d encourage them to give it a chance. I even recommended it to a friend with a 19-year-old daughter as a great father-daughter movie experience. The modern updates and reimagined elements make it a fresh take on a timeless story, making it worth watching.

I really can’t understand what all the flap is about other than critics have to be critical! Take a child or even a grown love interest with you to see it. I’ll bet there are both smiles and a few loving tears generated. I recommend it! Hey, it’s making me whistle while I work!!!??
